A History of the License Plate

License plates were originally thought of back in the late 1800’s in the United States because the early automobiles were causing roads to deteriorate quickly. Even though the first state-required license plate wasn’t issued until 1903 in Massachusetts, as early as 1893 the States began to realize that some form of regulation and financial resources were needed to repair and keep up with the roads.

In addition to this, public safety was becoming a concern and law enforcement needed a way to keep tabs on the vehicle owner and their actions. That’s how the license plate was born.

The Very First Auto Plate

In 1901, New York was the first state to require license plates. However, New York did not issue license plates back then, so interestingly enough the very first license plates were created by the individual owners of these early vehicles. These early auto plates typically just had the vehicle owners’ initials.

The First State Issued Auto Plate

The very first state-issued license plate was issued in Massachusetts and actually had a number “1” on it. It was issued to a man named Frederick Tudor. Rumor has it that his relatives still keep up with the registration of this very first state-issued license tag.

License Plates Now

License plates in all states and provinces are either semi-permanent or permanent and last either for a period of longer than a year or throughout the ownership of the vehicle. When registration fees are due annually, decals are issued to attach to the license plate.

Currently there are 31 out of the 51 States and Jurisdictions that require two plates for each vehicle, a front auto plate and a rear auto plate. The rest of the Jurisdictions require just a license tag at the rear of the vehicle.
